Igniting Business Transformation: Insights from AIDA's Networking Event
Dr. Olivia Sheng: Pioneering AI Literacy
Dr. Olivia Sheng, the W. P. Carey Distinguished Chair & Professor and Co-Director of AIDA, kicked off the evening by painting a vivid picture of the future of AI. She likened AI to literacy in society, emphasizing its deep impact on businesses. Dr. Sheng spoke of a future where AI's applications know no bounds. From revolutionizing targeted marketing strategies to bolstering automated fraud detection, the potential for businesses is truly transformative. She urged businesses to seize the opportunity today by strengthening their AI know-how, fostering collaborations with academic institutions for workforce training, and tailoring existing AI models to fit a diverse range of domains. The message was crystal clear: the time to harness the power of AI is now, and the avenues for doing so are wide open.
She then gave a brief primer about artificial neural networks and how it has developed historically. It was surprising to learn that foundational work on it started as long back as the 1940s. It goes to show that true advancements in AI are rooted in theoretical concepts with the potential for superior solutions, regardless of computational demands. A long-lasting legacy can be built upon a flexible architecture that accommodates future innovations, even if it takes decades, as evidenced by the evolution of AI.
In her closing remarks, she spoke about the paradigm shift we’re experiencing in GenerativeAI. The focus is transitioning from training large models to implementing pre-trained ones. Instead of the traditional emphasis on feature engineering, there's a pivot towards prompt-engineering. Moreover, the criteria for success have evolved from mere accuracy to encompass a broader spectrum: accuracy, equity, ethics, responsibility, and mindfulness in AI applications.
Dr. Joseph Cazier: Navigating the AI Landscape
Dr. Joseph Cazier, a Clinical Professor and Associate Director at AIDA, delivered a captivating presentation, shedding light on the rationale behind organizations' multi-billion-dollar investments in AI research and development. He presented a staggering statistic: 89% of AI research projects fail, according to a report by MIT Sloan. However, the remaining 11% that succeed yield exponential returns, justifying the hefty investments.

Success in analytics, he argued, hinges on leadership and organizational alignment with AI objectives. When companies learn and adapt well, they can make the most of opportunities and respond quickly to changes. Success in AI depends on people and machines learning together. This was a big lesson from the event.
Networking Hour: Fostering Connections
The event's networking hour was a dynamic exchange of ideas and connections. Attendees ranged from seasoned professionals to young entrepreneurs, representing a diverse cross-section of the community.
